I said there would be some new footage by now. As you can see there isn’t any. I lie a lot. I did write something though that I’m pretty pleased with.
I just got done watching the finale of Dexter. Ho-ly shit. Words cannot describe how good it was. I’m going to bring this up, because I love Jennifer Carpenter, but that scene with her and Michael C. Hall where they are talking was one of many absolutely amazing scenes. I know I seem to kiss her ass a lot on this blog, but she is fucking phenomenal. I read a tweet by SHO_Dexter that they should just give John Lithgow the Emmy right now. They really should. Everyone who’s seen that show would probably be absolutely fine with that. OK, I’m going to stop. I hate the fact that I have to wait so long for a new season. That ending was an absolute shock. OK, I’m stopping. While I could write a whole page just on Jennifer Carpenter, I think this is enough.
It’s tough for me to concentrate after that show but I’ll do my best. My new script still needs to be revised, but I like it so far. I’m going to try and commit some time to it every day. I hold on to projects for way too long. Or I lose interest or something and start working on something else. See, I’m OCD and ADD at the same time. I’m OCD about film making and stuff and I’m obsessed with it. But my ADD makes it so I constantly get really excited about the next idea. Only I’m not done with the first idea, so it doesn’t really work. I need to focus on one project from now on. Or maybe I just need to write constantly to keep up with myself. I suppose that couldn’t be a bad thing.
In other news, Do Nice Guys Finish Last got a fully operational IMDB page:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1561452/
They listed me as a stunt coordinator. OK, whatever, sure, I’m a stunt coordinator. It’s also listed as being in Post production. Nope, it’s done. Chris is on there and so is Caine. If you go to my IMDB page, I now have two films listed there. I’ve hit the big time now people. It’s all smooth sailing from here. In all seriousness, it’s kind of cool, but that’s about it. It does sort of add to my legitimacy though. I’ve had conversations like this before:
“So, you do short films?”
“Yeah.”
“What kind of short films?”
“Mostly comedies.”
“really?”
“Yeah, I’m on IMDB and everything.”
“O my God! Really?!”
I don’t know why, but that’s sort of how it is. Almost like they thought I lied to them or something. I’m not a liar, it’s bullshit.
Note: See title of blog.

Today should be the day that Gabe brings me Do Nice Guys Finish Last. Then, I just have to make a couple changes to the credits and we are all set. I didn’t realize it, but I’ve filled up my schedule with recent projects. I’m doing editing for that guy that guy that does video game videos. By the way, my After Effects endeavor last night was a total failure. That’s ok, I’ll try again tonight. I’m doing programming for that film festival. I’m trying to finish up Do Nice Guys Finish Last. I’m trying to write something else to shoot. I should probably cut NHL10 out for about a week to catch up on everything. Damn it, I really like that game.
Last nights episode of Dexter contained probably the best fight/kill scene of the entire series. That’s saying a lot, because they are all really well done. You know when you see something really good and for some reason your initial reaction is to let out a sort of nervous laugh? Why is that? Anyway, I got that when the fight scene started in Dexter. That was followed by a “Holy shit.”
I saw Where the Wild Things Are on Saturday. The more I think about it, the more I like it. It was really nicely shot and it was pretty well thought out and deep. I liked the book as a kid, but the story line in it was really vague. I think they filled in the gaps nicely with this movie. Anyway, it was great, go see it. I still haven’t seen Zombie Land. I want to see that so bad. Maybe I’ll check it out sometime this week and let you guys know what I thought.

So, we are still waiting on the judging for Do Nice Guys Finish Last. Again, we gave 2 versions of the short film to 5 people and told them to pick which one they liked best. We are still waiting on their final word. Maybe we will have it by the end of today. Then, we will be done and I will send it off to film festivals. It’s nerve racking having other people look at your short film for the first time. O well, that’s why we make them, right?
I’m reading A TV Writers Workbook by Ellen Sandler still. This book is unbelievable. I’m loving it so far. It really does put writing in to a process that’s not so daunting and intimidating. Plus she’s a writer at heart, so she knows how to put an entertaining twist on everything she says. I remember a long time ago, I read a book on short film making. I forgot what it was called or who wrote it. It had loads of great information in it, but my God was it boring to read. It was like reading VCR instructions. I’m actually kind of excited whenever I read A TV Writers Workbook. I want to know what she has to say. I’m taking my time with it and actually doing the exercises in the book as I go. Sometimes I read chapters over again, just to put the information to memory. Even if you don’t want to get involved in writing for TV, I would recommend it. It’s a great writers guide and the techniques can be applied anywhere.
Now on to a random fact that I discovered last night. I’m really trying to get my girlfriend addicted to Dexter. So, I’ve started watching season 1 with her. My girlfriend loves True Blood. She can’t get enough of it. We’ve stayed up till like midnight watching episode after episode of True Blood. Which for me is early, but for her is insanely late. Anyway, we are watching Dexter and she says “Hey, that guys is on True Blood. He plays Sam Merlotte.” Low and behold there he was, Sam Trammell, the actor who plays Sam Merlotte. He was on the second show of the first season and he was one of Dexter’s victims. He was an alcoholic that would go from city to city drinking and driving. Every single time he would get too drunk and hit someone he would just pack up and move to another city. So, if anyone ever asks you “what True Blood character had an appearance on Dexter in the first season?” You can say Sam Trammell. Not that anyone will ever ask you that. I suppose calling it a useless fact was quite justified.

Here’s what we did for Do Nice Guys Finish Last. I did a version with transitions and Gabe did a version with transitions. We are then going to let 3 people watch them both and give us their opinion. Why? We both had very different ideas of how the transitions should look. This isn’t really about who’s right and who’s wrong, it’s about what works better. Were we tempted to just say screw it and pick one? Yes. But we both decided that we are so close to the end that it would be stupid to just blindly pick one. We’ve spent a lot of time and energy making this look how we want it to. Why should we half ass it at the end? Once this is done, we are done. I’m going to start sending it out. I’m kind of nervous and excited all at the same time.
Anyone catch last nights episode of Dexter? How is it possible that a show gets better and better with each season? I don’t think I’ve ever had a show hold my absolute attention as long as this one. I mean, I’ve been watching The Simpsons since I was like 9. But I don’t think I’ve ever been anticipating a new season of that show at all really. It’s The Simpsons, if it’s on, you watch it. If it’s an episode you haven’t seen already, cool. I’m trying to get my girlfriend in to Dexter, but it’s not really working out so well. I watched the first episode of the show yesterday with her and she said she didn’t know how she felt about it. She said she was kind of disturbed. It’s kind of a disturbing show. But that’s why I like it. She’s the first person I’ve met that hasn’t been instantly addicted to this show. We’ve got like a small cult following of the show at work and we all talk about it. I realized something about the first season that I didn’t really notice before. The cinematography in that show took a lot more risks then season 2, 3, and so far 4. It just seemed to get a lot more standard after season 1. Season 1 used close ups, weird angles, and really dark lighting. I wonder if it’s success caused that? I just wonder what changed. The first episode was especially thought out. The first time you see him kill someone and he’s questioning the victim, they hid his face in the dark. The rest of him is visible, but his face is hidden. I think it’s because they wanted to show that side of him as sort of something to fear. Like a monster without a face. We always fear something that we can’t see. They also seemed to go with a dark lighting scheme whenever the scene revolved around him either planning or on his way to kill someone. I thought it was a nice choice. The show is still lit darkly at times, but I felt it was much more edgy in the first season. I like the show either way.
I saw Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs yesterday. I was interested in that new technology that they used for it. They hooked a camera up in a room with sensors in it. When the camera man looked through the lens he saw what was in the 3d animated world. They could then play scenes or sequences from the movie and have an actual camera man capture it. They could record all of the camera mans movements and incorporate that in to the scene. I thought it was awesome that they could do that and a good idea. That movie was great. What makes a great kids movie is a movie that parents can take their kids to that the parents can enjoy too. You know once the kid gets that movie on DVD, he/she is going to watch it at least a million times. It has to be enjoyable to both the kids watching it and the parents. I think Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs can be for everyone. I thought it was really entertaining, I liked it. It was an great story and some of the visuals were amazing.
I’ll keep you guys updated on Do Nice Guys Finish Last.

Dexter, season 4 starts on Sunday. Rather then buy the DVD’s (Which I will probably do anyway) I think I’ll just watch the show this season like a normal person. See, most people like the waiting and being left on a cliff hanger. I absolutely hate it. That’s why I usually wait for the DVD’s. It just works out better for me. That way, when an episode ends on a cliffhanger, I can just hit “Next Episode” on the DVD menu and be fine. I’m very tempted to read the Dexter books, but I love that show way too much. I’m afraid it might give something away. I’ll read them when the show is over. I’ve said this before, but Jennifer Carpenter is amazing on that show. There’s an actress that has what seems to be an unlimited amount of potential. The only movie I’ve seen with her has been The Exorcism of Emily Rose. She was amazing in that. I’ll probably watch her other stuff one of these days. Apparently she has a movie coming out in 2011 called The Factory that takes place in Buffalo New York. That’s kind of awesome. I have somewhat of a connection to Buffalo New York. First off the Buffalo Sabres are from there and my Dad grew up there. While I’m a Ducks fan at heart, I certainly wouldn’t mind the Sabres winning the cup. My Dad is a die hard Sabres fan. If it ever came down to the Sabres vs the Ducks for the Stanley Cup, it would be a brutal couple of weeks for my family. We would have to go to the games of course. Which would mean traveling between Buffalo and Anaheim. The games would be very tense. We have gone to two regular season games where it’s been Buffalo vs Anaheim, once in Buffalo and once in Anaheim. Both times the Ducks slaughtered the Sabres. I was a little torn honestly. On one hand my Dad was being somewhat destroyed, but on the other, the Ducks were winning. The first goal, I did my usual stand up and cheer. At around the third it just started to get sad, so I reserved myself to just clapping from my seat, shrugging, and saying “Sorry Dad.” There were a couple smart ass comments from my Dad. But they were all in good fun. “So when are they going to do the flying v?” was something that was all in good fun. I don’t want to know what would be said if we were in the Stanley Cup Final. The Emilio Estevez cracks and The Mighty Ducks movie comments would probably turn in to “You’re a fucking disgrace to this family and you were adopted!” I wouldn’t be surprised if a fist fight broke out. I’ve got a slight reach advantage, so I could probably keep him at bay with some quick jabs, but my Dad was in the Coast Guard. I bet he could probably grind me out till the later rounds and then move in for the kill. You know, that isn’t a bad idea for a script. A father and son have to deal with their respective teams going to the Stanley Cup. I should look in to that. There really aren’t enough hockey movies out there. What the hell was I talking about? Jennifer Carpenter? How did I get on a fist fight with my Dad and hockey? Anyway, Dexter season 4 is going to be awesome, Jennifer Carpenter is awesome, Ducks are awesome, and The Sabres are awesome.
I should be doing the transitions with Gabe on Do Nice Guys Finish Last this weekend. Probably Sunday.

I finished up Dexter season 3 last night. I like how every season of that show leaves on an ending note. Rather then a cliff hanger that you have to wait months and months to figure out what’s going on. Seasons 1, 2, and 3 could have ended the series and I would have been perfectly happy with it. I’m glad that it went longer, I’m just saying that the show does a good job of wrapping everything up at the end. With each season, Dexter seems to come to some sort of realization that seems to sum up all of his experiences. I really do enjoy how it does that. Season 1 was phenomenal, season 2 was better, and I think season 3 was the best out of all of them.
I still haven’t done the audio work on Do Nice Guys Finish Last. I guess it will have to be after my vacation. I’m going to Minnesota for a while. I will do it as soon as I get back though.
I also figured I would take this opportunity to plug the SoCal Film Fest again. Here is where you can buy tickets:

Yesterday, while delivering something for work, I saw a sign that said “Dexter” with an arrow on it pointing in the direction I was going. I stayed on course and just kept going. Then I had to make a right and there was another sign, right before my turn with an arrow pointing to the right. I still just kept going. Then I saw an arrow leading in to a parking lot that said “Dexter Crew.” My first thought was “no freaking way.” On my way back from my delivery I stopped off in the parking lot just to see it was true or not. Low and behold, there were several wardrobe and equipment trucks parked near the back. I didn’t run on set or anything or even get out of my car. I just wanted to confirm that they were shooting my favorite TV show of all time a stones throw from where I was. I drove back to work and then went back to the place again on my lunch break this time determined to talk to someone. The first person I saw was a security guard. I asked him if they needed any extras, or extra crew or anything. He said no, so I got in my car and went back to my stupid job. So many thoughts went through my head before I approached that security guard. What would I have done if he said yes? Would I have called my job and told them I wasn’t coming back from lunch? Absolutely. What if they had said that I couldn’t do that? Would I have let them fire me? Probably. After my conversation with the guard, a million other thoughts hit me. Why am I not applying to work on crews on weekends? What the hell am I doing here? Here’s where it gets a bit stalkerish. On my way home from work, there were basically two routes I could take. One that drove me right past the Dexter shoot and one that didn’t. I fully intended to just go home, but something made me drive by one more time. I wanted to give my card to somebody. Even if it was just the security guard. So, I approached the same security guard once again and after telling him I was sorry for bothering him handed him my card and asked if he could please hand it off to someone. He told me he would. Several things could have happened here. The most likely is that it went to the security guards pocket and that’s where it stayed. It will be there until the security guard either washes his pants or empties his pockets and throws it out along with some gum wrappers and receipts. Another possibility is that he did actually hand it off to someone. Where it’s now sitting in their pocket until they wash their pants or throw it out along with some gum wrappers and receipts. This is pretty likely as well. The unlikeliest of scenarios is that he did hand it off, the person he gave it to looked at it and thought to themselves “Maybe I’ll give this guy a call.” Or maybe they took that card and filled it under “P” for Psycho. I have to say, going there for the third time did make me feel a little bit like a stalker. I wasn’t disruptive or anything though. I didn’t try to break on to the set or talk my way in. I wasn’t trying to steal any wardrobe, I was really just looking for an opportunity. An opportunity to see how a big time production operates and to help out with that. Dexter is my favorite show, of course I would take any long shot chance presented to me to work on it. On my way to the Dexter shoot after work, I couldn’t help but think that it was fate. That maybe something would come out of it. It doesn’t end with that security guard though. I think this was a wake up call, that what I want to do is right in my backyard and all I have to do is try. What are the odds that I would have to do a delivery that day and that my delivery would pass right by a shoot of one of my favorite shows of all time? Fate or not, it was a wake up call for me.
On to other things though, right? Just because I passed by a Dexter shoot in my car doesn’t mean my world stops. Last night I was up pretty late getting some screen shots from Do Nice Guys Finish Last. I’m trying to put a press kit together. I got about 40 screen captures for it. Here are a few of my favorites. Keep in mind that these are pre color correction:

I think they look pretty good. I really like that behind the scenes one with the clacker. I just think that’s a really cool picture. The press kit is well on its way.
An update on the Censored showing at the SoCal Film Festival. The festival has an updated list of which program has the best ticket sales. Censored is in Program 10 and Program 10 is listed as third. Clearly that’s all because of me. The six or seven visitors my site gets must have gone to town on those tickets sales. Again, here is the info of where you can buy tickets:

Censored is playing in Program 10 on Friday 9/18/2009 at 7:20 PM. It should be a good time. There are lots of other short films playing there. I’ll definitely be there.
Sooner then that though, I’ll be down near the Huntington Beach Pier this Thursday to watch Finding Nemo at the SoCal Movies by the pier event. Partially to try to get people to see Censored, but mainly because that event sounds kind of awesome. Stop by and say hello if you’re in the area.

I finished up watching season one of True Blood last weekend. Really awesome show. I’ve also been watching Dexter, Season 3. Is it possibly for that show to be any more awesome then it already is? Every single season I expect that show to be not as good as the previous season and that doesn’t happen. It’s very strange. Somehow, none of the characters are getting stale at all. It’s just strange, because the show goes against everything that I know. Jennifer Carpenter is amazing on that show. She plays Dexter’s sister. She was also in The Exorcism of Emily Rose. She played Emily Rose in that movie and there are a couple scenes where she goes insane. She nails it. The first time I watched that movie was with a friend of mine that never shuts the hell up. Between the two of us there’s some sort of constant noise at all times when we are together. I think the only thing said throughout that entire movie was “…..O shit.” She’s really good at playing afraid. While she’s been great in what she’s done, I’m sure we haven’t seen what she can really do quite yet.
Still waiting on the color correction for Do Nice Guys Finish Last from Gabe. I did get an update from the SoCal Film Festival. Apparently they are having a competition to see which program can sell the most tickets. I’m not really in to all of this competitive stuff. Now go buy some tickets so my program can break in to the top 6. Again, Censored is playing in Program 10. You can buy tickets here. Dooooo it.

So, apparently I can see in to the future. In my last post I talked about how great it would be to get in to the SoCal Film Festival. Later that day, I got an acceptance E-Mail from the SoCal Film Festival. I have freak luck like that sometimes. Before shooting Nice Guys Finish Last, I needed a light kit. The kit I wanted cost about $900. As sort of a joke to my room mate I said
“I’m going to make $1100 today.”
before I left the house. So, I’m walking to the bank. I decided to walk, for some reason. I forget why. I think because parking in my complex sucks and I already had a good spot. So, I’m going to cross the street and the little blinky guy tells me it’s time to walk. So I step in to the street and BAM it hits me! Not an idea of how I’m going to make $1100, but a truck making a right turn. I wasn’t really hurt, I was just shocked. I was walking and then all of a sudden I was on the ground. It sort of knocked me back and I fell back on to the sidewalk. As I’m getting up, a guy is getting out of the truck with an “O shit” look on his face. He comes running over to me and says
“O my God! I’m sorry! I’m Sorry! I’m sorry! Are you ok?! O fuck! I didn’t see you! I’m so sorry!”
The guy was like physically shaking. So I stand up and I’m a little confused. I’m thinking to myself “What the hell just happened? Who the hell is this guy? What’s going on?” Finally, I put two and two together and realize what happened. I tell the guy I’m ok and he’s still freaking out. He looks back at his truck and back at me and says
“I’m so sorry! You’re not going to call the cops are you?! I can’t deal with the cops, my license is suspended because of a DUI! Please don’t call the cops!”
I’m still a bit dazed, so I’m just kind of standing there confused. Then he says
“Look, I get these settlement checks every month from a job injury I got 3 months ago. I’ll sign the settlement check and give it to you. Then we can both just walk away. OK, sound good?”
Before I could say anything he was handing me the check and shaking my hand. In all honesty, I probably wouldn’t have taken it if he had let me speak. I had no injuries, it was a mistake, no big deal. I checked later and there was literally, not a scratch on me.
I look down at the check as he drives off and it’s for $2253.43. I figured somehow, the universe conspired to help me, so I donated $1153.43 to my sister for my niece, for a college fund or something.
Weird, huh? That’s sort of how I felt about The SoCal Film Festival post yesterday. Maybe I should try that more often.
Man! It sure would be great if Kevin Smith, David Fincher, Peter Jackson, Sam Rami, Quentin Tarantino, Robert Rodriguez, or Guillermo del Toro E-Mailed me and offered me a sweet ass paid internship! Or if I got invied to help out on Dexter, my favorite show of all time! You know what, I would settle for an E-Mail interview with Michael C. Hall or really anyone on that cast.
I think part of my success with film festivals has to do with how easy I make it for them. First of all Censored is 3:30 seconds long. I note that on the DVD I send out, along with the title, my name, what region DVD it is, what film festival it’s for, and the tracking number they give me when I pay online. I also put another sticker on the back of the case with the title, my name, my phone number, and the tracking number again. And I use very stylish Simpons stamps. My goal is for them to take one look at the DVD and not have to do anything extra. I want them to open the envelope, take one look at it, pop it in to the DVD player, and go. No looking up information and no wondering what the DVD is, who made it, and why they have to watch it. No extra steps. Festivals can sometimes get thousands of DVD’s, why would you make it any more difficult for them? You’re only asking for a rejection letter if you do.
Wow, I went way off course. I originally started this post to talk about the SoCal Film Festival. I just mailed my screener copy to them. According to my records, the festival takes place from 9/14/2009 – 9/23/2009. I haven’t gotten the exact schedule or location yet, but I will be sure to let you guys know when I do. I have a lot of friends in this area who couldn’t make it to the LA shows. Which is totally understandable. I’m one of the few insane OCers that thinks that LA “Isn’t that far.” It will be nice to be so close to a festival for a change. I’m really looking forward to it.
Here is the link to the festivals website and I hope some of you can make it:

So, today is the day that Gabe gets my notes for the first Nice Guys Finish Last cut. He’s been camping for a week straight. I hope his arms didn’t get ripped off by a bear or something. That would suck. How would he edit? Now that he’s back though we can really get to work on this thing.
I just realized this weekend that I’ve been referring to Nice Guys Finish Last incorrectly. The title isn’t Nice Guys Finish Last, it’s Do Nice Guys Finish Last?. That totally screws up my acronym for it too. It’s not NGFL, it’s DNGFL. I like the first acronym better. Meh, it doesn’t matter.
Right now in LA, the Crazy 4 Cult art show is going on. It’s all art that people have done based off of cult classic films. Check out the web site here. There’s all kinds of stuff there. If you check the web site, you can see what’s for sale. Prices range quite a bit. There’s stuff for the casual enthusiast for like $25 and stuff for the hard core art collector for like $4000. I haven’t checked it out yet, but I hope to make it out there sometime this week. I’m a big fan of cult classic movies. Fight Club is my absolute favorite movie of all time. What actually defines a movie as “Cult Classic” though? I suppose it’s a movie with a small, but loyal following. I guess it’s like comparing Transformers to The Big Lebowski. Transformers made a shit load of money, but nobody really talked about it after it was released. The Big Lebowski has Lebowski Fest, which happened in Long Beach this year, which I attended. The Big Lebowski was released in 1998. Ten years later, they are still holding a festival to celebrate it’s release. In ten years will anybody really even be talking about Transformers? No, probably not. Some cult classics actually bomb in theaters. Fight Club, Super Troopers, and Donnie Darko are all good examples. All bombed in theaters, but look at them now. I think I’ve had 4 hour long conversations about Donnie Darko before. That movie is amazing, for that very reason. It only made $517,375 in theaters. It probably killed in DVD sales. I bet it did so shitty in theaters because, really, how do you explain that movie to someone?
“OK, there’s this kid and this guy dressed as a rabbit and he can possibly see in to the future. He’s taking medication and because he sleep walks the plane engine that falls through the roof of his house doesn’t kill him and then he meets the guy in the rabbit suit…. No, wait, the rabbit tells him to sleep walk, so he knew the rabbit before that…..Or something.”
After trying to explain that movie like 3 times I finally gave up and now if someone asks me what it’s about, I just say
“Just see it, it’s an awesome movie.”
Maybe what saved it is it’s movie channel debut. That’s where I first saw it. It has some really interesting shots. The first time I flipped to it, it was at the point where Donnie is looking in the bathroom mirror and stabbing it with a knife. After watching that scene for like 20 seconds, I immediately went to my On Demand thing and started from the beginning. That one scene just brought up way too many questions. I couldn’t resist.
I ordered Dexter Season 3 from Amazon on Sunday. It’s on sale right now for $21.49. It’s not out yet, but I preordered it. I love that show so much. I will see Gamer just because Michael C. Hall is in. When he’s playing Dexter he plays it with a touch of sarcasm when he’s hiding who he really is. It’s also a touch of “I’m acting.” Not acting, like acting on a show, like putting on an act just to please everyone else. It’s very subtle, but I think it makes the show. If you came in mid show and started watching it at a point where Dexter is in front of normal people you would probably think “something is up with that guy.” It makes it, because something is up with him. He’s a serial killer.
Directing actors is always my favorite part of film making. It’s never the same experience. You’re always trying to convey something differently. I bet Martin Brest(director) had a giant grin on his face when he was directing Al Pacino in the scene from Scent of a Woman where he’s in the auditorium. That is without a doubt on my list of top 3 monologues ever performed. One of the other ones on my top 3 is the scene in The Devils Advocate where Al Pacino is giving that speech about mankind and God. At one point during that scene I actually thought to myself “Wow…. I never knew that Al Pacino was the Devil. That’s awesome.”
